Seattle Excursions

Hi, everyone!
I'm sorry it's been awhile-life just gets busier every day! We have been doing well (aside from a few colds here and there) and enjoying some visits from family! Last weekend my sister and her husband came to visit, and this past weekend my parents were here! It's such fun to have them come over, we were sad to see them all go.
On Sundays, if Bray gets done early, we try to go for a little 'excursion.' A few weeks ago, we went down to the wharf, and walked along all the piers-we even found a carousel to ride! Last weekend, we went down by the Space Needle, which is near the performance hall. They have several fun museums right around there, that we are planning on saving up for! There's the Pacific Science Center (which I went to as a kid!), the Children's Museum complete with a Mr.Potato Head exhibit, the Music Experience (which is designed very strangely, yet very cool) the Science Fiction museum and more! It was fun to just walk around and look at the area, and we ended up eating ice cream by this cool fountain that shot water over 50 feet in the air, and matched the water movement to musical compositions! Very fun! Anyhoo, here are a few pics-once again I apologize, but the ole camera only works half the time.:(
The fun fountain!

"Yappers"

I realized it's been awhile since I did a professional-Bray update. It's hard to remember what I've said already, but since the life of a musician is a bit confusing, I'll just begin with-well-the beginning of Seattle.
Bray officially began rehearsals the first week of October, and he was supposed to have learned the 1st opera they are doing, as well as some other music. We didn't really know what to expect, as we've only done summer YAP's before (YAP= Young Artist Program) so we just went into it, trusting God would guide us.
His 1st day was fairly uneventful (besides the absolutely crazy, ridiculous bus system here in Seattle) and he seemed to receive good feedback from the directors, coach-accompanists and language teachers. We were hoping he would have a semi-regular schedule, but, alas, they get their schedule for the following day at 7 pm. This makes it a little tricky to plan other things, but we are now in a sort of rhythm.
A typical day for Bray includes a 3-hour staging/run-through of the opera in the morning, and then vocal coachings, Italian lessons, and personal repertoire coachings throughout the rest of the day. He gets done about 6:00pm, but often has evening events to perform at, such as dinners, meetings, private parties, etc.. One great thing so far is that every few weeks or so, they bring in an agent or representative of different opera companies around the country to hear all the 'Yappers' audition. (Yappers is the nickname they call themselves...aka Young Artists).
One difficult thing has been the scheduling, though. They rehearse 6 days a week, from Wednesday through Monday, which means he has rehearsals on Sundays. This is a new thing for us, and it is not typically a regularity in the opera world either. The director here (who is a big name) flies to LA on Tuesdays to teach at UCLA, thus making it mandatory for them to rehearse on the weekends.
We are not thrilled about this, but change comes slowly, right? We go to early services on the days that he has rehearsals.
However, due to Bray's good work ethic, and attitude, the director seems to like him so far, and has been willing to listen to his opinions, etc.. We continue to ask for your prayers as we pursue this field-it is most definitely not dominated by Christians, and needs to be! I have been very impressed with how Bray has said 'No' when he needs to, and not been hesitant to state what he believes and what he is there to do.
They begin performances of their first opera, Eugene Onegin, a Russian opera that they are performing in English, this weekend. It is the typical operatic storyline in that it is about 2 best friends, fighting over a girl, and it ends with a duel and ultimately, Bray's death. He told me it's very dramatic and moving, and I am VERY excited to see it!
I hope I have not drawn this out too long, but like I said earlier, it's hard for me to explain the crazy music life in few words. One last thing, that Bray himself would not tell you, but being the proud, excited wife, I have to brag a little...2 of the directors said that Bray is 1 of their favorite up-and-coming tenors, as long as he gets all the final details in place! So again, do keep us in your prayers, especially Bray as this is a challenging career! We miss you all, and let us know if you want to come see him perform! The Seattle Young Artists.

Hobbes' version of Happy Birthday.

He really knows the whole thing...but I think he was a little too excited to eat the cake! I believe the end of it is actually part of Trust and Obey thrown in...but, hey, whatever works, right?

Miss Runaround.

I caught the end of her circle running around the park...she literally ran around the entire thing, for 20 minutes...and then decided to climb and go down the slide.
She just has to be 'busy.'

New toy from Gege!!!

Wendy sent the kiddos this Leap Frog alphabet toy-they have the letter factory video, and they LOVE anything having to do with letters! Thanks Gege and Bop!

Fall in Seattle

Ducks, trying to stay warm...View from the docks-look at those trees beginning to turn!(ignore the pink light my camera likes to add)
Bray, teaching Hobbes how to look at the water, without falling in it.
Gorgeous road right by the lake!
Yellow tree-had to take a picture!
Sitting on the dock.

Afternoon Tea

The other day, I came in to the living room to find this scene:

I couldn't interrupt, but I thought it was one of the sweetest things I've ever seen....he's a wonderful father-and husband, too!

Confusing commands.

As most of you know, repetition is a huge part of teaching little kids. We have Hobbes repeat what we say, most often when we are disciplining him, so that we know he understands what is going on. We also have him say "Yes, ma'am," not only because it's polite, but because he is half-Southern!
Today, after having a little disciplinary encounter with me, I said, "So be a sweet boy and share with your sister, ok?"
His reply: "Yes, ma'am, Amen."
Getting a little confused-or just trying to save time, either way, I thought it was pretty funny.

25-and going to Chuck E Cheese?

Hello, everyone!
Yes, I turned 25 today-can you believe it? For some reason, I've always thought 25 sounded older than 30. Bray had rehearsals all day, so I stayed home with the kiddos, and we went and had a rainy picnic at the park by the lake, and then I got the apartment ready for Kathryn to come and visit tomorrow! I made myself a delicious angel food cake (my favorite every year!) but this year I decided to frost it-and I must say, it turned out pretty well! (Madeline taste-tested the frosting for me). I thought we would just have a quiet evening at home, but Bray got done earlier than he thought, and asked if I would like to go somewhere. For some reason, who knows why, the first place that popped into my head was Chuck E Cheese's. Now you may think I'm crazy, and you're probably right, but I have never been, always wanted to go, and I wanted a kid-friendly, cheap place, so that fit the bill.
We went out in the pouring rain, and had a blast being kids with our kids! What a great birthday!
(Hobbes even sang "Happy Birthday" to me 3 times today-I'll put a video up of it later)Trying to do 25-but it looked like 52. Hmm...the mind is going already!
Ahh-there's 25.
Me and my distracted buddy-boy.

Bray and Madeline, dancing to the robotic Chuck E Cheese performance.Driving Bob the Builder's tractor...

Giddyap!Look at that shot- and the follow-through! Do we have an athlete on our hands? :)

Well, he may have a good arm, but he cheats-he climbed into the game to dunk it-and steal another ball without an extra token.
Yes...Bray climbed in the toddler slide-thing. But the kids loved it-more people to play with!

But-when I decide to climb in and join the fun, everyone left. Hello, birthday girl?

Hard to get out of kid-mode once you're in it...all I asked for was a nice photo of the 2 of us. It took several shots to get it.:)There we go-me and the hubby.
My yummy fall Angel Food cake!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, everyone!

Potty Training Quips.

Me: "Hobbes, do you need to go to the potty?"
Hobbes: "No."
Me: "Are you sure?"
Hobbes, nodding his head in affirmation: "Mommy needs to go potty. Hobbes no go potty. Mommy goes to the potty."
Hmm. He's coming up with alternative answers for questions...what do I do now!

Rockers.

New favorite pastime:
Rockin' out in the rocking chair....and sometimes trying to rock the other one off. But, for the most part, they like to see how hard they can make it rock together. Pretty cute, and they're contained! Works for me!

Favorite moments.

I don't usually post unless I have big news or pictures to put up, but I had one of those 'Mom' moments today that I just had to write about.
I was in my room, folding laundry while the kids were playing in the living room. They were talking about random stuff, when I heard Hobbes' voice saying, "Mommy, where are you? Where'd you go?" Then he pushed open my door and walked in, closely followed by Madeline. He looks up at me, and says "Oh there you are, Mommy!" and then hugged my legs really tight. He turned around to walk out, and Madeline stepped in to give me a second hug. They then proceeded on their merry way-they just needed to check on me-and I'm sure glad they did!

Trains, trains, trains...

I know I've mentioned previously that trains are Hobbes' new obsession. My parents gave him a Thomas set for his birthday, and since then, it's been alll trains! Our new deal for actually getting the other half of potty training down (I'll let you figure out which half) is that we WILL go ride a real train. So, every day Hobbes tells me he wants to ride a black train, or a blue train, or a FAST red train...it changes with each morning. So far, no success, but the desire to ride the train is still there, so-it WILLLL HAPPEN!!!!
Anyhow, his favorite thing to do now is to take all his track pieces, and make a new, different-shaped track somewhere around the apartment. He loves to make tunnels and bridges with the furniture, so he moves it all by himself, and then lays on the ground, driving his trains on it. When he decides it's time to move to a new location, he gets his grocery cart, fills it with the track, and drives it to the next place to unload and rebuild. Super cute, so I had to take a picture, especially for my Dad. I know the track blends in with the carpet a bit, but you get the idea.

Nightwalker

Like Father, like Son:
Bray is a sleepwalker, and I have found him in many random places since we have been married. Kneeling, facing the couch with his head down in it, sitting in an empty tub...you name it, it has happened. Hobbes doesn't do it exactly the same way, but he has a semblance of sleepwalking in him. What he does, is he'll halfway wake up, jump out of bed, open his door, and then peek out at us. There's nothing really behind his eyes, and usually he has an extremely goofy grin on, so we just tell him it's still nighttime, and to go back to bed-and he does it without a squeak. It's the strangest, funniest, and perhaps a little bit creepy, thing! Anyhow, I tried to get a picture of it the other night...But then he crawled towards the camera...see the eyes? NOT awake.

Pike Street!

So, since Bray starts rehearsals tomorrow, we decided to hit Pike Street on Friday with the whole fam. Of course, we chose the day where it was pouring rain, but at least that way we experienced Seattle in its true colors, right? No, seriously, considering everything it was a lot of fun, and the kids seemed to enjoy the busyness of the market, the flowers, the cookies, all the street musicians, and even getting wet. I have searched high and low for rain boots for Madeline and a rain jacket for Hobbes, but to no avail. You'd think they'd have a huge market for rain gear here-but, I guess they just assume you're equipped if you live here!
Anyhow, our stroller doesn't block wind or rain very well, so we ducked into this little historic shelter on the street to eat our lunch. They had a huge pig in it, that the kids loved, so this is where I took the pics-I didn't want to risk our sickly camera in the rain!

More apartment pics...

Dining area:My little pretend 'hallway' setup.
Fireplace, pumpkins, TV armoire...and some amazing lighting...we are either going to blow up a picture of Bray, or put some holy picture there....you have to work with the energy in the room!:)
